What is BJJ and is it Good for Self-Defence?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art centred on grappling which is based on developing and mastering the skills involved in resisting an opponent and forcing him to submit. Many of the core techniques of BJJ are centred on the ground with the aim of taking an opponent down to the ground.

In order to control and overcome assailants of greater size, strength and aggression, the BJJ practitioner must utilise superior leverage, grip and positioning against their opponent. Students of BJJ, during the course of their training develop a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the body and use this knowledge to gain the upper hand over their opponents.

The origins of BJJ can be traced back to the later part of the 19th century when a number of Jiu-Jitsu masters moved from Japan to various destinations with one of these destinations being Brazil. A master called Mitsuyo Maeda arrived in Brazil in 1915 and met a man by the name of Gastao Garcie. Gastao took an avid interest in Jiu-Jitsu and took his oldest son Carlos to receive instruction from the Japanese master, with Carlos eventually, in 1925, opening the first school known as the Academia Gracie de Jiu-Jitsu.

The good news is that you no longer have to travel to Brazil for BJJ training, you can do it right here in Bangkok at Marrok Force MMA Club. We offer training sessions in both Gi and No-Gi BJJ and would be happy to provide you with more details on which form would best suit your needs.

Is BJJ good for self-defence?

Although not specifically for self defence, BJJ offers its practitioners an enhanced sense of situational and body awareness which can be utilised to defend themselves against attackers of all sizes. When combined with a striking based discipline such as Muay Thai or Boxing, the self-defence capabilities are significantly enhanced.
